Pronunciation Lesson 1

In this 3-part lesson, we will be looking at:

Part 1

Big Sounds

In words of more than one syllable, we use MORE energy to pronounce one of the syllables. We need to mark and remember which syllable is the important one  – otherwise, people may not understand us.

In this short video, you will learn more about word stress:

  • where we put word stress and
  • how to pronounce words so that people can understand you.

You will also see how words are written in a dictionary and how word stress is indicated.

Correction: [1:53-1:55] “/,fəʊ.tə’gærf.ik/” The correct is “/,fəʊ.tə’græf.ik/”

Part 2

Do you dya?

Do you know how to pronounce do you?

Do you know that there are different ways to pronounce these two words?

Do you find it difficult when people speak quickly?

Do you is often pronounced very differently in the company of other words (connected speech) and it’s easy to not understand that you’re being asked a question. It’s normal to misunderstand. So don’t feel embarrassed. In this video you will learn a few secret tips to improve your listening and speaking.

 Part 3

Happy or happy?

Do you know how to pronounce these pairs:

Happy?

Yes?

Happy.

This is great, really interesting and encouraging! So nice to follow, make new sense of familiar sounds and start sounding like a native speaker, at last! 🙂

Thank you so much, hope you enjoy the rest of the course and others.

This is excellent and of great help. Fun and easy to listen to. I speak English now, but still struggle with the accent. Alan explains it so logically and without complication. Thank you.

I could learn about pronunciation. In Japan we don’t practice about it many times.
It was good way to remember pronounce to take underline. I’m gonna keep to do it.

All of parts was sooo interesting! I think it is important for me to say the words in order to remember correct pronunciation.
